Although some people may be able to achieve washboard abs through exercises, others are not so lucky and may need a helping hand. Abdominoplasty also known as a "tummy tuck" is a surgical solution which provides effective improvement for sagging or bulging bellies caused by excess fat or muscles stretched from pregnancy or rapid loss of weight. When looking into getting a tummy tuck in Barrie Ontario patients must ensure that they are fully informed about the procedure and that it it right for them.

People who are in good health but struggle with a saggy or bulging tummy that does not shrink in response to exercise or diet are normally considered suitable candidates for this procedure. Quite often, patients who opt to undergo an abdominoplasty have either been left with excess slackness in the skin due to substantial weight loss, or stretched skin and muscles from many pregnancies.

It's not a good idea to go ahead with this surgery in the case of women who still intend to get pregnant or anyone who plans on losing more weight, as this will negate the effects of the procedure which sculpts the belly by removing fat and tightening muscles and skin. It is not intended to be used as an easy way out when it comes to slimming down either.

During the initial consultation with the cosmetic surgeon the patient will find out what is involved and what he or she can expect from the procedure. It is important to inform the doctor of all medications one is taking, and those who smoke will need to quit completely for at least two weeks before and two weeks following the surgery.

A general anesthesia will be given to the patient, and an overnight stay is usually indicated. If the entire abdomen is being reconstructed, this is called a complete abdominoplasty, and if only the area below the navel is involved it is known as a partial tummy tuck. The length of the surgery ranges from 1 to 5 hours.

It will be necessary for someone else to drive the patient home, and ideally stay with him or her the first night. Pain and swelling following surgery is normal and may last for several weeks. Ice packs and analgesics can help ease this discomfort. Complications are fairly rare but can include infections, bleeding, and blood clots. Patients who suffer from illnesses such as diabetes, impaired circulation, heart or liver disease are more susceptible to experiencing these problems.

Patients will be given instructions by the surgeon for caring for the bandaged area as to promote healing and minimize pain. Scarring is unavoidable entirely with tummy tuck procedures, but with proper application of prescribed topical preparations it can be reduced so it is not as noticeable.

People whose occupations involve a fair amount of strenuous activity should consider taking a month off work, and in general, all patients need to restrict their physical exertion for six weeks after the procedure. Results are typically pleasing to those who go through with the operation, and as long as they eat right and exercise, it's not hard to maintain.
