How Students are Helping Brain Cancer Research

By Rob Sutter

Sometimes all a good cause needs to be pushed to a higher level is the people behind it. It doesn't matter what age they may be because it seems like the drive people have is something that cannot be understated. For a group of high school students, brain cancer research seems to be helped in a great way. With so much money being raised in the name of research for this cause, I don't think that it's right to call this anything but a success.

The story that was shown on the CBS 5 AZ website went into detail about the students of Saguaro High School and their work in the yearly Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research walk-a-thon event. Held yearly, this event has been great for the cause and the amount of money it has raised cannot be denied. The event started back in 2002 and since then the earnings have totaled over $1.75 million. When you consider that last year's event alone brought in $215,000, it says a lot about the devotion people have for this.

I don't think it's any secret that these events have been a great deal of success in terms of brain cancer research. It's one of those causes that many establishments work to help and for the most part a great deal of work has been seen to uncover new findings to help therapies and seek out cures as well. However, funds are important as they are used to further research along. I'm one of those people who will support reputable organizations like Voices Against Brain Cancer until the goal is ultimately met and even after that.

The fact that this organization is run entirely by students, as the article says, should be something to note as well. It doesn't seem as though teachers and other members of faculty have had any part in this, apart from maybe the funding that has allowed it to be in activity since 2002. The students made this come about once three young people in the Paradise Valley School District were diagnosed during that time. These tumors are known to be the number one cause of death in teenagers.

This is a sad fact, to be certain, but that's why brain cancer research is consistently done. It's also why people on the outside offer their assistance on the matter through events which raise money. The students of the Paradise Valley School District have done exceedingly well when you consider the amount of money it has raised since 2002. Hopefully more people will see the drive these young people have and be driven themselves to lend a hand to help this reputable cause as well.
