The procedure in which the skin appearance is improved by using lasers is known as laser resurfacing. The procedure is also used to treat minor flaws. For the procedure, two types of lasers are used. There is the non wounding laser that stimulates collagen growth and also tightens growth of the skin underneath. The second is the wounding laser that removes layers of skin. The former is less invasive and is done in a shorter time. Laser resurfacing treatments in Cincinnati should be done professionally.

Skin resurfacing decreases the appearance of facial fine lines. That aside, it treats loss of skin tone and enhances complexion in those who have scars or have been affected by sun damage. With these procedures, there are a few limitations that one will need to be aware of. After understanding the techniques to be used, results to expect and risks involved, it will be easier to make the decision to go for the procedure.

Various conditions can be treated. They include among others age spots, uneven skin texture, skin damaged by the sun and liver spots. In addition, people with scars brought about by acne will get relief. However, those whose skins are sagging may not be able to get any help. There are various ways to prepare when going for laser skin resurfacing. The medical history of the patient will have to be reviewed. Such details as past medical conditions will need to be known. Further, if the patient has had cosmetic procedures in the past, the information will need to be known.

A physical examination will be required. There is inspection of the skin and examination of the areas to be examined. Such examination will help to determine the changes that will be required and if there are any physical features that may affect the outcome. The physician will also discuss what motivated the patient to consider the procedure and their expectations. Potential risks are also discussed.

Ablative treatment is an outpatient procedure. Prior to being done, the eyes are covered and the face cleaned. Local anesthetics are used to numb the skin. In case the resurfacing is extensive, sedation may be required. This is for instance when the whole face is to be treated. An intense light beam is directed to the skin for treatment.

The laser beam will destroy the outer layer of the skin while at the same time heating the underlying areas. The effect of this is that collagen fibers will shrink. As the wound heals, tighter smoother skin will be formed. The whole procedure takes between 30 minutes and two hours. The time taken is dependent on the technique used and also on the size of area to be treated.

For the non ablative treatment, the treatment area will be cleaned, followed by covering of the eyes. Numbing of the skin may be necessary some hours prior to treatment. For protection of the outer layer of the skin, cool air or water based gel is used. There is no removal of skin.

After treatment, the patient is expected to avoid exposure to the sun for about one year. Otherwise, there will be irregular pigmentation. When going for this treatment, one should remember that results may not be permanent.
