Why Switch To A Straight-edge Razor?

By Linda Parker

At first, using a straight razor could intimidate those who are unfamiliar with wet-shaving. And while these blades certainly take time and dedication to learn, you can still learn how to do it. If you're still wondering why one would ditch modern blades for the ancient straight-edge razor, the latter offers some benefits not found with the former.

If you switch to a straight razor and spend some time learning how to use it properly, you can expect a vastly comfortable and superior shave. With the standalone blade, you have an unparalleled degree of freedom. There's no guard to keep you from decreasing or increasing the angle, and you could turn the knob for a more/less aggressive shave. Thanks to the multiple strokes and angles, you're able to completely control your shave.

Although the average straight blade is quite sharp, it doesn't need special materials to achieve this. This is usually the case with most modern equivalents, which need special materials to attain the same level of slickness. On the contrary, straight razors only need specialized polishing to keep them sharp. If you switch to a straight razor, you'll no longer have to dread the irritation that follows shaving, thanks to this. The superiorly sharp blade only needs to be run once or twice, which reduces both irritation and the risk of cutting yourself.

Modern tri-blades work via a process known as hysteresis. Here, hair strands are pulled out by the first blade, while the ones that follow cut. Because the follicle is forced to retract beneath the skin surface, there's more likelihood of ingrown hair. This is because all the blades won't necessarily follow an identical path on the way. However, you'll never have to deal with such annoying situations when you switch to wet shaving.

Switching to a straight blade offers cost-saving benefits. In fact, you'll only need to buy the blade and a few other tools used to maintain it. Because most of them are only purchased once, you'll spend less than you would on modern alternatives. The quality of modern blades doesn't even go in line with their exorbitant prices.

Switching to a straight razor, conventional soap and a brush means one minimizes their environmental impact. Vintage blades don't even add emissions during the manufacturing process. And with no landfill waste or CFCs from aerosolized shaving products, using an open blade is perhaps the greenest way to shave. Old blades can even be sent to a recycling plant once one is done using them.

The open blade shave offers unrivaled luxury and craftsmanship. From the warm lather on your face to the smooth, irritation-free cut, you cannot find a better shave. And because much of the grinding, forging and assembly is done by hand, lots of craftsmanship go into making the blade. The satisfaction that comes with a clean shave, coupled with these factors, means that one soon starts looking forward to shaving.

As one would see, there are many reasons why you should ditch whatever you currently use to shave and opt for a much better open blade. The traditional artisan technique involved offers quality results and luxury that you won't find on modern alternatives. The blades not only get the job done efficiently, but also bring little or no side effects. Their simplicity also means you can use them just about anywhere.
