Save Our Planet By Planting Trees

By Morgan Ackerly

Do you know that all around the world, 3 to 6 billion trees are cut down each and every year. This has to do with the demand for the products that are produced from trees. For instance, paper is utilized both in the home and workplace and lumber is used in the building of homes. Alas, we need the things that the trees produce but we can do something about the depletion of our forests.

Trees are celebrated on Arbor Day and the purpose of having Arbor Day is that we must plant trees at that time but this is not really dealing with the issue. The truth is, trees are not being planted by most people. It would help, of course, if everyone did.

There are roughly seven billion people in the world now. The actual numbers naturally fluctuate and so this is a calculated estimate. But if every of those 7 billion individuals went out and planted a tree every Arbor Day, we would be able to replace all the trees that were felled that year. Sadly, this won't ever happen.

Hence, the suggestion is for those of you who care about our planet and want oxygen so you can live, plant a tree. I am not restricting this to planting trees on just one day each year. I am talking more or less once per month or even once every week. We must try to make up for those who don't plant trees even though they continue to use the earth's valuable resources.

If we look at Arbor Day, the number of trees that are planted is only between 8 and 15 million. Hence annually, we are short by roughly 5 billion trees. Regrettably, the situation is not improving.

A complete answer is necessary that still encourages men and women to plant trees but I would likewise propose the following. It could be made a legal requirement that anyone involved in chopping down trees must replace each tree chopped down with two newly planted ones and this would go a long way to solving the problem.

However, until somebody can turn this into reality, we are left to take care of replacing the trees ourselves. In reality, restoring the number of trees required is definitely doable. If each month, roughly 10% of people in the world could plant a tree, that would make up for the numbers being chopped down each year. In yearly terms, this would equal to the planting of more or less 7 billion trees. For the number of trees we need to return to, an effective net gain of 1 billion trees will be the means to reach this goal.

Every individual concerned about the health of our ecosystems can assist by planting trees. Once again, it just takes 10% of the world population to begin making a difference. Only you can decide if you want to step up and help.
