Tooth Whitening Treatments - The Pros and Cons

By Tracey Fielding

Choosing teeth whitening products amidst the different teeth whitening products available in the market today can be very confusing. And some of the teeth whitening products are not giving you the desired result.

When seeking an expert opinion, teeth whitening through the dentist is still considered the best way to go. It is not only the most effective, but the quickest way to get those pearly white teeth you are after.

However many people would not like to pay the high cost of professional teeth whitening services. Another thing that might put them off is the fear of going to the dentist. It would seem that since childhood, visiting the dentist is one of the most disliked experiences a person can have.

Though you don't normally find Dentists promoting teeth whitening products, I'm sure most would agree that they do work. Studies have even shown that some of these products are so good that they do just as good a job as procedures performed by dentists.

Possibly the reason why, is that many of the treatments now available over the counter have the same ingredients as products used by professional services. Two of the active ingredients needed for whitening teeth are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide. You can even find many of these products in department and grocery stores.

The biggest advantage of over the counter teeth whitening products is the low cost. The affordability means that teeth whitening is now within the anyone's reach and they can just pick it up with their basic shopping.

Now days we only need to spend up to $30 for these products. Just compare that to the usual $100 or more charged by Dentist and other professional services and you can see why this is becoming the preferred choice for tooth whitening

Still, teeth whitening products are found out to have some disadvantages. Some of these are:

1. Suitability.

Teeth whitening product manufacturers try to cater to everyone in their market. But the problem is, each person is different and we have different needs. What one person finds effective may not work for others. This is one of the problems that people will encounter with these products.

There are those that have sensitive teeth and gums. The reaction to the products will depend upon the suitability of the products to the persons using them. Trying a number of different products till you have found one that is agreeable is your best option.

2. Chemical Used

You will not know what your reaction to the product until you have tried it out. And since you most probably don't have specialist knowledge that dentists do you may not know what to look for if you have sensitive teeth.

You should check with a dentist if you have any doubts.

3. Tray may not fit.

The tray that comes standard with the product is a "one size fits all" It may be too small or possibly too big. When it is too large, the formula may not work well. On the other side of the coin when the tray is too small it could cause irritation including bleeding to your gums.

You should definitely weigh up all your options and try to find the most suitable product. If nothing seems to work then you may want to try a professional teeth whitening treatment.
