Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty or lipectomy) is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to redistribute body fat in a manner that aims to improve body contours and proportions. It may be done in isolation or alongside other similar procedures such as breast reduction surgery, tummy tuck or facelift with the aim of getting the best possible results. The surgery can be performed in Merrillville, IN 46410. There are a number of things on liposuction northwest Indiana residents may wish to know if they intend to undergo the procedure.

Since its advent in the 1960s, the procedure has undergone many modifications in a bid to refine the outcomes. Initially, surgeons adopted what is known as the tumescent technique that involved infusing fluid into the areas of interest using cannulas to cause lipolysis. Once the fat had been broken down, it was removed from the site using a high vacuum suction machine. The most preferred mode of anaesthesia at the time was local anaesthesia.

Recently, surgeons have turned to the use of the ultrasound. Here, a probe connected to the machine is used to liquefy fat before it is removed from a site. There has been variable success with some of the surgeons sticking to the older techniques. Overall, newer practices have helped reduce the risks associated with the surgery. They have also decreased post operative discomfort. It should be noted that the success of liposuction is greatly dependent on the surgical skill of the surgeon.

Preparation to undergo the procedure is mandatory. The doctor needs to know whether or not you are fit to undergo the surgery. During the preparation, one is typically taken through a clinical history and then examined. Blood tests are done to check whether you have the required haemoglobin level. It is a requirement that one is of good general health status and is above 18 years of age.

The surgeon attempts to use just the right amount of fat. If improperly done, there may be formation of uneven mounds on the skin which is an undesirable effect among patients. The procedure should also create little or no disturbance of the surrounding tissues such as blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues.

Some of the areas from which fat is harvested include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, cheeks and the neck among others. You need to discuss with your doctor on what areas you want the fat increased and those that you want their fat reduced. In some cases, there is a need to have several surgeries before the final desired result can be achieved.

There are several risks that you need to be aware of even as you plan to have the procedure. The results may not come out as expected and as a matter of fact one may be disappointed at what they look at the end of it. When too much fat has been removed, there is a chance of disturbing fluid balance in the body.

Most people recover within a week and are ready to resume their daily routines. We should all understand that liposuction is not a substitute to physical exercise and diet. It should be done to augment the two.
