If someone has no prior experience with chiropractic care methods, he or she will find it difficult to understand how spinal adjustments can alleviate leg pain. The vertebrae in the spine are small bones which encase and protect the spinal cord. The nerves located there activate all movement in the body. A chart in the office of a prominent North Royalton chiropractor can help you understand the nervous system.

The reason that sciatica makes one and sometimes both legs hurt is that the sciatic nerve branches down from the lower back to the leg, foot and toes. The cause of sciatica can be an intervertebral disc that is herniated. Other possible causes include bone spurs or a narrowing of the spine.

Compression of the sciatic nerve will cause the affected leg to become inflamed, feel numb and suffer a significant amount of pain. Your chiropractor will not suggest manual adjustments or any other care until a full assessment is done. The spine is examined physically and range-of-motion and strength testing is done. An x-ray is taken.

Once the assessment is complete, a plan for your care will be made. In most cases a series of spinal adjustments will be scheduled to relieve pressure on the nerve. These will be administered over time in the chiropractors office.

Pain alleviation occurs faster or slower depending on the client. No two people are going to respond the same. Factors like age will affect the speed at which your hurting is lessened. You may, in addition to the adjustments, have an exercise program designed specifically for you. It can be followed at home between office visits.

The hurting sciatica causes radiates down the leg because it is following the path taken by the nerves. That pain can extend down the thigh, calf and sometimes to the foot and toes. Reducing the pain will certainly improve your quality of life.
