By Joe Macker

Hives (or urticaria) is a type of skin rash that have elevated, itchy wheals (or bumps), and are usually caused by an allergic reaction. Hives become visible when the body releases histamines into the bloodstream after being exposed to a substance that it is sensitive or allergic to. Hives are typically seen on the front of the upper body and usually last for a day or even up to 6 weeks.

Some causes of hives are the following:

a. eating or touching food allergens such as seafood, egg, nuts, and berries

b. negative reactions to medicine

c. exposure to plants like poison ivy

d. stings from bees, wasps, and other insects

e. negative reactions to soaps and strong perfumes

f. extreme weather

g. exposure to water or sweat

h. stress

While hives is a common episode to nearly 25% of the population, the accompanying swelling, itching, and pain could cause minor to severe discomfort. For some, breathing and swallowing is very difficult. Because of these discomforts, the affected person will be compelled to seek for treatments.

One alternative is to stay away from allergens. Antihistamines may be prescribed by doctors too; however one must know that this can cause drowsiness, affecting tasks from being done on time. Many individuals now resort to natural hives remedies that are readily found in gardens and even cupboards. Here are some of them which you may find useful:

Acupressure. Massaging the muscle around the neck and shoulder helps relieve the hives. It may remove the obvious white and red patches on the affected areas of the body.

Pineapple. When dabbed onto the affected area, the fruit releases anti-inflammatory agents that ease hives.

Green Tea and Chamomile Tea These tea contain antihistamine properties which also help relieve hibes. They can also calm and soothe the nerves, and can also relieve stress.

Oatmeal. Grind some oatmeal, cornstarch, and baking soda in your food processor and add them to your bath. This can relieve the itch brought about by hives.
