An automobile accident can cause extensive injury to an individual. He or she may be left with pain that is serious enough to disrupt employment and other activities. Whiplash occurs when the head is jerked forward and then abruptly jerked backward. The victim may be unable to turn his head. A leading Sunshine Coast Chiropractor is someone those victims turn to for help.

Making a first appointment with a chiropractor begins the healing process. During that meeting an evaluation of the injury will be conducted. You will be questioned about the location of the pain and how severe it is. A physical exam of the spine and sometimes an x-ray are next.

The spinal column consists of a series of hollow bones called vertebrae. A disc containing a gel-like substance provides a cushioning effect between them to prevent them from rubbing against each other. You may be left with a slipped disc as a result of the accident.

A slipped disc is often called a pinched nerve. In any case, when a nerve is pressed or pinched, pain is the result. Following an accident, a vertebra may be out of place and that caused pressure. In chiropractic terminology, this is referred to as a subluxation.

The evaluation will assist the chiropractor in deciding on the optimal care plan for you. The goal is to correct the subluxation and a series of adjustments may serve to coax the vertebrae back into place. You will then be capable of returning to work, keeping the level of pain at a manageable level.

You may think of correcting the subluxation, or misalignment of the vertebrae, in the same way an orthodontist thinks of teeth in need of straightening. The vertebrae, like the misaligned teeth, are gently coaxed back into the correct position. This relieves the pressure on the nerve or nerves causing your pain. Your Sunshine Coast Chiropractor can explain in detail how this is achieved and together you can arrange a care plan to manage your pain.
