Bioidentical is a word that combines biological and identical. Identical hormones share the exact molecular structure as hormones produced by the human body. The use of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, called BHRT, has increased in recent years. BHRT is used by men and women to combat the symptoms of menopause. Philadelphia Customized Wellness programs have a directory of medical doctors with the advanced training in BHRT.

Bioidentical hormones come from the natural plants yams and soy. The hormones are made or synthesized by extracting chemicals from yams and soy. While the plants are natural, the process of extracting chemicals does not occur naturally. Whether or not a product is natural is not as important as knowing that using the hormone is safe.

Men have been using BHRT to combat the symptoms of male menopause, also known as andropause. Men may experience depressions, muscle loss, erectile dysfunction, thinning hair or weight gain due to the hormonal imbalance of menopause. The bioidentical hormones are metabolized by the body the same as hormones that the body makes itself.

Women use BHRT to combat the symptoms of female menopause, such as mood swings, hot flashes and night sweats. The hormones come in pill, patch, cream or gel forms. The objectives of BHRT are to eliminate the symptoms of female and male menopause and to return the patient to a state of wellness.

Harvard Health Publications has detailed information regarding the brand names of estrogen, progestin and combined HRT medications. A lengthy table lists the type and source, the brand name, the form preparation and whether or not each are bioidentical. This information will be helpful to patients currently seeing or planning to see a physician about BHRT.

BHRT can also be used to combat the signs of aging. Hormonal imbalance can affect energy, the immune system, bone health and more. As people age these conditions can become more bothersome. Whatever makes a patient decide to use BHRT, they should do so with some self education and a physician trained in this field.
