Liposuction (lipoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to change the distribution of body fat. Changing the distribution of fat effectively alters the shape of the body. Unwanted fat deposits are usually removed from various body parts such as the hips, the tummy, thighs and the neck among others. If they intend to have liposuction northwest Indiana residents need to understand a number of things.

There are certain criteria that a candidate should meet if they want to undergo the operation. The first requirement (though not mandatory) is that they should have tried the non-invasive options of losing their body fat. The other requirement is that they should have a body mass index, BMI, of not less than 40. If they have a weight related condition, a lower BMI may be considered.

The preparation for the operation varies from case to case. In general, however, there are a number of things that you need to avoid so as to increase the chances of success. One of the habits to be stopped (at least for two months prior to and after the operation) is smoking. The nicotine found in tobacco delays wound healing. Other things to be avoided include aspirin and blood thinners. These increase the risk of bleeding.

There are some limitations of this operation. For instance, it is not a suitable treatment for obesity. This is because only a maximum of 3 liters of fat can be removed from a body region at any given time. Removing too much fat in some areas is likely to leave loose skin that is unsightly. Additional surgeries to tighten the skin are needed in such situation.

There are many different techniques that can be employed in liposuction. One of the most popular is known as the tumescent technique. It involves the infiltration of the area of interest with a local anesthetic agent. The advantage of doing this is that there will be less blood loss and less postoperative pain. Another commonly practiced technique is suction-assisted lipoplasty. With this technique, the main procedure is the removal of fat cells using a vacuum suction machine. Other techniques involve the use of laser and ultrasound.

After the operation, you may notice oozing of fluids from the surgical incision. This may take a couple of days but stops spontaneously. Some surgeons may put a drain tube at this site to help with the drainage and remove it afterwards. It is important that you put on tight clothing that compresses the wounds to have the best results after healing occurs. The garments may be provided by your health facility or you will be asked to buy them beforehand.

The complications arising from this operation are rare. Immediate complications may include bleeding, damage to adjacent structures, infections and reactions to the anesthetic drugs used. Talk to your doctor if you get any of these complications. In the long term, the commonly encountered complications include unsatisfactory results and hideous scar tissues. Additional procedures are needed in some cases.

Although the results of the procedure are considered permanent, there are a number of things that you need to do to maintain your new look. Engaging in regular physical activity is among the most important. It will help you prevent unnecessary accumulation of fat. The next important thing is to have a healthy, well-balanced diet.
