A patient education is a process where in the patients and as well as their caregivers are provided with information about changing their health lifestyles and improving status of health. This is usually conducted by some health professionals. These healthcare professionals that have undertaken the appropriate education and training for patient communication.

This education requires the elements of building the skills and the responsibilities. It is important for the patients to know why, when, and how they will need to change their lifestyle. The group or the members of health care team of a patient must be involved to this. Patient education handouts are important for them to know the values of it.

In order for them to quickly respond on medical care, providing handouts to them is one very important thing. This is to inform them on the promotion of healthy behaviors, about health problems, and descriptions of medical treatments. To develop a handout is difficult according to caregivers because they do not have proper training and proper time for doing the design and writing.

Even journalists and skilled writers have difficulties on providing information and instructions that all patients could understand. And even those writing contents which are already correct grammatically are not enough. So it would be very necessary for writers to possess the skills of creativity, sensitivity, and flexibility when talking about their illustrations, language, and graphic designs so all patients can understand those handouts.

Typically, contents written in a handout is consists of descriptions and information of diseases and advices for it from the caregivers. These are considered as extensions of spoken communications. For the reason of increasing the understanding for how readers will be giving importance to these contents, how the content is created and is maintained, and how behaviors have influenced the people, there would really be a possibility that the handouts will become very effective.

There are 3 reasons of why handouts are considered important. First is it serves as an extension for the medical care and it can also affect its quality. The main purpose of a handout is for improving the health of patients and their life quality. The handout should be improving the behaviors through changing their skills, knowledge, choices, and values that are related to health.

Second is the spoken messages may possibly be forgotten quickly, thus, an informative handout is useful. It is possible that spoken messages are quickly lost and can be reinterpreted. So a handout can prevent reinterpretation and loss and would help in reducing to remember instructions and to guess some forgotten meanings.

Third is that patients can provide opinions about their own caregivers through the handouts. A handout communicates both message and meta message. The message are the instructions given to patients and meta message is the importance of message and patients to caregivers. Both the message and the meta message are also important for the marketing involvement of a certain institution.

To improve a persons understanding on diagnosis, medical conditions, disabilities, diseases, and managing methods of condition aspects is one important value of patient education. Another is to improve self advocacy when deciding to be independent or dependent to the medical provider. Lastly, to decrease number of phone calls and also visits and to lower risks of malpractice to expectations.
