Because the neck is flexible and responsible for supporting the weight of the head, it can be susceptible for conditions and injuries that can cause mobility and pain. Diseases and disorders can involve some issues in the neck ranging from common infections, to degenerative disc disease. Common causes of neck and shoulder pain are injuries to soft tissues that may affect tendons, muscles and ligaments. Let's further examine these common causes of neck pain and how they can be addressed by a chiropractor.

Alleviating Nerve Compression

Extending from the brain, down through the spinal column, and extending outward - nerves are used to send communication throughout the body. Pain signals are sent to signify a problem such as one or more of them being compressed between bones or tissue. This condition is often cause by repetitive motions or being in a restricted position for long times. The pressure often results in high discomfort in one's appendages, shoulders, back, or neck.

Chronic Disorders

Rheumatoid and spondylosis are common causes of neck pain and often occur due to aging and the degeneration of the neck bones. Both causes are known to cause neck discomfort, stiffness and pain. Other symptoms of cervical spondylosis includes neck crackling or popping, trouble sleeping and pain that radiates in both arms. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects the joints of the wrists and joints, but can also affect bones in the neck, causing great discomfort and pain.

Strained Muscles

Repetitively looking at a smartphone, sitting at a desk for long periods of time on front of a computer combined with poor posture can lead to muscle strain. Grinding the teeth during sleep and even driving a car for an extended time without standing and stretching can lead to neck pain.

While this type of joint pain is commonly thought to be something only older people need to be concerned with, the fact is that almost 65% of adults between 18 and 34 complain of chronic discomfort of the neck. One's quality of life can be significantly improved by seeking the advice and assistance of a chiropractic professional who can pinpoint the source of the pains and formulate a plan to eliminate them.
