Bursitis occurs when the bursae (tiny sacs of fluid that cushion the joints) become inflamed. Bursae prevent excessive friction between muscles and bones. Rheumatic conditions, repetitive motions, injuries, and the aging process can cause these protective elements to become compressed, resulting in pain. Bursitis frequently develops in the knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, heels, and ankles, but it can appear in other areas of the body, too. Fortunately, chiropractic can alleviate the pain and swelling associated with the condition.

Whenever inflammation is prolonged or recurring, it is usually possible to use x-rays to detect it. If this is a condition that is still in the developmental stages, swelling may be alleviated via ultrasound. Many chiropractors use massage along with this modality.

Once the condition is stabilized, joint manipulations may be the next step in a patient's chiropractic care plan. While many people associate manipulations with the spine, they can be applied to the extremities as well. Adjusting the joints loosens stiff soft tissues, improves nervous system functioning, and relieves pressure on the bursae.

Physiotherapy strengthens affected musculoskeletal structures, making them less susceptible to injury. Damaged soft tissues tend not to be used because of the pain, leading to muscle atrophy. To augment the benefits of therapeutic manipulations, patients are usually given exercises to do at home between appointments. Movement boosts circulation, delivering nutrients to soft tissues while removing waste. Physical therapy not only builds stamina, but also increases flexibility and range of motion. Exercise routines are customized to meet the unique needs of each patient.

There are even times when chiropractors recommend making dietary modifications or using supplements to bolster the health of the joints. It is possible for patients to receive tests for ruling nutritional deficiencies out. Getting the right amounts of all essential minerals and vitamins can speed up your recovery while helping you gain a higher level of all-around health.

Chiropractic therapy offers a broad range of effective, natural and safe solutions for bursitis that do not require surgery or medication. This whole body approach goes beyond managing symptoms to address problems at their underlying cause and to prevent these issues from recurring.
