One of the activities that are categorized under performing arts is dancing. This involves intentionally selected sequence of movements made by parts of the body. The movements could either have an aesthetic or symbolic value that makes performers and observers within a specific culture acknowledge it. Dancing can be classified in various ways which include historical period, place of origin, choreography, repertoire, and many others. Other kinds of human movements that are considered to have some dance-like quality include marching bands, martial arts, gymnastics, cheerleading, figure skating, and synchronized swimming. Competitive dance is the kind of dancing whereby participants compete against each other. It is a common sport with various styles like ballet, acro, modern, hip-hop, musical theatre, tap, lyrical, contemporary and jazz. The participants have their performance done in front of a common group of adjudicators. The adjudicators then choose which group of individuals or individual has the best performance. The winner is then announced after all the contestants have performed.

The job of being a competitive dancer is a challenging one, requiring a lot of physical fitness even during short dances. It is a requirement for one to train and exercise daily to boost and maintain their skills, strength, flexibility, and technique. In competitive dancing, participants engage in activities all year, only receiving short breaks on holidays and in summer.

During a competition season, dancers are required to attend classes so as to improve and perfect their competitive routines. On the other hand, during the off-season, dancers continue going for training as part of preparation for the next season. There are even intensives that some dancers attend during summer in order to boost their skills.

Tunes from commercially available songs performed by professional recording singers are usually used in dance routines. During competitions, routines are often subjected to time limits. This means the dancers have to complete their routines within the time frame allocated to them. Therefore, to match the time limits, the original commercial music is usually edited. The dance type in consideration usually determines the music choice.

Currently, there are no set standards in the whole industry on how to score points in a competition. The number of points issuable by a judge and the maximum points one can score often vary with different competitions. When assigning dancers with points, judges put several factors under consideration. Among these factors includes technique, performance, choice, music, challenge level, and costumes.

Different competitions do not have similar ranks. Some competitions offer gold as the highest medal awarded to the dancers while others have crystals. There are also title positions present in most competitions. Therefore, dancers have to work hard to attain the highest title position and medal. It usually costs extra for dancers to compete for title positions.

A crown and money are usually given as an award for those who win title positions. Title position holders in dance competitions are usually respected by most people. If the competition is at country level, the position holder would be considered as the president in the country. A lot of attention is given to the title position holder.
