The dermatologist has now the luxury to choose from several medication that that will be the most effective for the patient. The most common treatment of acne is direct application of the drug on the skin. Aside from the direct application method, another way of acne treatment is by taking medicines orally. This gives dermatologists alternative ways of treating acne, especially when the disease is getting worse.

In order to better control acne, some dermatologist extensively uses therapy as a curative method in addition to other types of medication. For dermatologists to use therapy the acne would have worsened so much and there is no positive reaction to the traditional method of treatment.

Aside from drugs that are applied directly to the skin, dermatologists may also prescribe orally taken drugs. The dermatologist may prescribe daily dosages of these antibiotics in order to control acne. Severe cases will require initial heavy dosages, to be phased out depending on the speed of improvement of the disease.

In lieu of direct application or oral intake of medicine, the dermatologist may choose to treat acne by injection. Grave cases of acne may require the use of injection drugs, and also to not leave any marks or blemishes on the patient. It is when acne does not respond to applied or oral medicine and even appear to be getting worse, that physician try using injections.

In the belief that it will control their acne, many women make a practice of taking oral contraceptives. The effect of oral contraceptives in women is changes in their hormones, and sometimes will result in reduced risks of acne. Women certainly think it is a great thing that they are taking just one medicine to address two problems. Not all women are benefits; on the contrary it may have an opposite result on them.

Some creams and ointment also was proven to be effective when used as acne treatment. These can be bought as beauty products or as prescription medicine. Some stronger acting creams and ointments can be acquired only with prescription and are more expensive. Prescription medications are usually used only in the treatment of hard cases of acne.

The decision of whether or not and when to consult a physician will depend solely on the person with acne. When they felt that their acne is getting out of control, then they would know that it is to their best interest to find treatment.
