Pre Diabetic Diet Tips

By Harry Barber

You may have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or insulin resistance if your doctor advised you to follow a pre diabetic diet. This would mean that your blood glucose tests show that your body is becoming resistant to insulin. It's possible for your blood glucose to be higher than normal but not enough for you to be diagnosed of having diabetes. There are steps you can take in order to avoid becoming a diabetic.

A serious illness that can have significant complications is diabetes. Suffering from damage to the circulation, arteries, and nerves are the diabetics. The results of these problems include impotence, kidney failure, strokes, and impaired vision. These are things you certainly want to avoid.

In many ways, people diagnosed with pre diabetes are lucky. They had a warning and can still turn things around. A few changes to your lifestyle could mean that you can escape ever having a diagnosis of diabetes.

Following a pre diabetic diet will be the most important thing that you can do for your health right now. Reducing weight is what your doctor will probably recommend if you're overweight. Just as important as reducing calories are making changes to what and when you eat.

Increasing the amount of fiber that you eat and cutting down on sugar and refined carbs is one of the most important factors in a pre diabetic diet. Try to follow some of these pre diabetic diet tips:

Instead of fruit juice, choose whole fruit. With juice, the natural sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream much faster because the fiber was removed, so the blood sugar will spike and you want to avoid this if you're trying to normalize your blood glucose levels.

Don't peel potatoes and other root vegetables. That's because the peel has more fiber. Avoid pesticides that may be found in the peel by buying organic. Don't buy pizza, burgers, breaded chicken or other food that you like in a fast food restaurant and make them at home instead. Besides using whole grain bread, you can also use less fat and end up with fewer calories.

Eating meals at regular times is important. This will keep your blood sugar regulated much better. Choose foods that are lower on the glycemic index and eat more often if you have a sugar rush after eating followed by a low a few hours later.

If you feel sleepy after eating, you probably ate too much. Try eating more green vegetables or having a salad before your main course. That way you can fill the stomach without taking in so many calories.

Along with following a pre diabetic diet, it is also important to make sure that you have regular exercise. Some physical activity every day will help to keep your systems running smoothly and regulate your blood glucose levels. What you do will depend on your fitness levels, but try at least to take a half hour walk each day.

Your body can effectively use insulin with the help of exercise. When you're effectively using insulin, blood glucose will then be converted to energy. If not, then it will be turned to fat. That is how exercise helps to regulate blood sugar levels. But the effect only lasts for between 12 and 48 hours, so it is important to exercise every day if you have pre diabetes. You should still follow your pre diabetic diet and this is just in addition to it.
