The substance is found in considerable quantities in a number of plants including paprika, green algae and crustaceans. It is responsible for the yellow or orange pigment in vegetables and carrots. It is a member of the carotenoids class. This class consists of biological pigments needed for vital metabolic reactions and coloring in living organisms. They are found in roots of plants, leaves and fruits and also in marine invertebrates.

As much as the chemical has numerous benefits, it should not be consumed in very large quantities similar to those required in commercial tanning. If abused, it may result into many complications including eye damage and vision loss.
