How To Get Angina Relief

By Larry Foster

The type of chest pain which is known as Angina often results when there is a shortage of blood supply to the heart. It is usually caused by a blockage of the coronary arteries (the main artery for the heart) or lack of oxygen in the blood supplied it. It can also be called ischemic heart disease. This condition comes with coronary artery disease and is an indicator that a heart attack can occur anytime.

Research has it that approximately 10 million people in the US suffer from this condition and it has a mortality rate of 37% per year. The symptoms of ischemic heart disease can be terrifying to patients as it gives an excruciating pain. However, these symptoms can be reduced and managed with proper medical advice on angina relief.

Angina is bound to occur when the heart does not receive sufficient blood supply to it. This is why it is common to see people with coronary artery disease affected by this. It comes with symptoms such as chest pain, back pain, nausea and pain in the left shoulder and arm. Abdominal pains also occur in females. Any effective cure should be such that can prevent blockage or narrowing of the coronary arteries.

If the blood supply or oxygen requirement of the myocardium (heart muscles) is compromised, ischemia can occur. As a result, there will be a lack of nutrients and oxygen and build up of metabolites in the tissues. The myocardium, in order to survive, switches to anaerobic metabolism. The end metabolic products and respiratory by-products, for example, hydrogen ion and carbon dioxide, vasodilates the blood vessels for the purpose of increasing blood flow. It also stimulates cardiac neuron resulting in pain, so they are said to be pain producing.

Atherosclerosis is not a thing to joke with because it can lead to coronary artery disease. This condition results from the deposition of cholesterol on the arterial wall and when there is an accumulation of it, atherosclerotic plaque results. If care is not taken, the plaque can grow over time and completely block the artery.

To stop angina, these factors that cause it must be treated. Four types of this sickness exist and they are stable, unstable, microvascular and variant. Patients with a stable type experience symptoms only when the heart is forced to do more work. This is the reason why it is advisable for people to visit their doctors before embarking on any kind of intense exercise. Resting and feeding properly can also reduce symptoms.

Drugs can also be used to get relieved from stable ischemic heart disease. A good one to take is glycerol nitrate and vasodilators. The vasodilators increase the diameter of the vessel so as to make more oxygen flow in and reduce the tendency for anaerobic metabolism which will lead to more pain. Care must be taken to avoid anything that has cholesterol. This same therapy is suitable for the other kinds of angina.

To prevent unstable angina, individuals are also expected to desist from cigarette smoking and eating foods that contain cholesterol. Prevention is much better than cure in this case because resting is usually not sufficient to reduce symptoms. More expensive procedures such as surgery and angioplasty are needed for treating this one.
