Lose Some Weight

By Anju Mathur, M.D.

If you're one of millions of Americans who want to lose weight, you are probably sick of hearing about all the new diets that promise a glamorous body and contradict each other. Weight loss is an American industry - who would support all those spas and fat farms and authors who write books about weight loss and companies who produce weight loss products and TV shows if there weren't hundreds of thousands of Americans who sincerely want to lose weight?

There is a rational way to lose weight - as opposed to all the fads. To correct the situation of too much weight gain one has to handle the cause of the weight gain, by looking at (1) the body (2) proper diet and (3) everyday lifestyle. The fads may actually work, but the most frequent story is that a person loses some weight, and then puts it back on, plus more.

PHYSICAL REMEDIES

Some people gain weight even if they stay away from fat foods - greasy hamburgers and pizza, etc. There is a material explanation for that. Truthfully, it's not all your fault. Maybe you eat the same things you have eaten all your life, yet the pounds add on.

As one ages, both men and women, production of hormones by the endocrine system dwindles. These hormones keep the body in balance and when the hormones are out of balance or some nearly missing altogether, metabolism can change and one gains weight.

A competent doctor trained in hormone replacement can help. He can prescribe a program of hormone replacement to restore hormones to a more youthful level. However, before prescribing such a program, a doctor would have to do an extensive interview and laboratory tests to find out which hormones are needed and in what amount. An important fact is that the replacement hormones must be bio-identical - in other words, the exact same hormones as the ones missing from the body.

As the hormones are restored gradiently, one begins to feel more youthful and it is easier to lose weight. The doctor may also test for other factors which may be missing - for example the brain neurotransmitter seratonin may be lacking and that would be important because that chemical helps the brain determine when the body is satisfied with the food ingested. Food allergies can also affect weight gain and loss.

EATING HABITS

A competent doctor will determine your metabolic type and prepare a diet plan for you individually. A healthy and sensible diet. It won't involve starving yourself and it won't involve drinking strange tea three times a day. It will just be normal healthy foods. Nobody has figured out how you can eat pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner and lose weight.

LIFESTYLE

The good news is you don't have to join a gym and work out 7 days a week. The bad news is you do have to make some changes in your life to get exercise. The good news is that when you do, you will feel better. A doctor trained in this area can help you figure out what your body needs and devise a program.
