Reducing Stress as a Natural Acne Remedy

By Sammi T. Hastie

If you happen to suffer from acne breakouts on a regular basis, you have probably spent a lot of time doing research on the topic already, and considered making use of natural acne remedies which can be applied at home. In fact, there are numerous home treatments for acne you may consider, and there are quite a number of them that do actually produce positive results. One specific remedy, however, which is usually overlooked, is stress reduction. While cutting down on stress will improve the quality of your life in general, it will also have a positive effect on your acne problem.

In layman's terms one can describe acne as a condition of the skin, normally brought about by an overactive sebum gland producing too much oil. While the skin needs a certain amount of natural oil, any excess can clog up pores, and result in acne. There are a number of factors which can cause the sebum gland to overproduce, including hormonal imbalances, poorly balanced diets, skin irritants, and of course stress. Stress has a multitude of negative effects on the human body, one of which is stimulating the sebum gland.

The best and most logical way to reduce stress is to simply distance yourself from the cause. For instance, if you find yourself becoming stressed at work, it might be a sign that you need to take some time out, or even a vacation. If, however, the stress is consistent over long periods of time, it could be time to consider alternative career options if possible.

Stress can also be caused by your own lifestyle. If you like to go out with friends during the night, drink alcoholic beverages, and sleep very late, then you need to consider a lifestyle change. This is because drinking alcohol would not help in achieving better health, especially if you pair it up with not getting enough rest. Thus, it is time that you cut down on alcohol consumption, and get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

In addition to these, you can engage in activities you enjoy, like watching a movie or reading a book. If it helps to relieve stress, it will positively contribute to naturally reducing your acne problem. Additionally, the reduction of stress will have positive effects in all other areas of your life.
