More About Facelifts

By D.J. Verret, MD

When considering a facelift, patients have many questions. There is a lot of information available, unfortunately some is advertising and not actual fact. Determining the procedure needed as well as the answers to questions, a consultation with a facial plastic surgeon is always needed before deciding to proceed with any cosmetic surgical procedure.

How much bruising is there after a facelift? Regardless of the type of facelift performed, there will be bruising. This is the limiting step for most patients to return to their normal activities. In most cases, within two weeks any bruising can be covered with makeup. Some bruising can remain for a month or sometimes longer in some cases. Generally, the more invasive the procedure, the greater the chance of bruising though there is always a chance for everyone.

Will I bruise after a facelift? Any surgical procedure, regardless of how small, runs a risk of bruising. While bruising will disappear over time, they can last from several days to a month or longer. The amount of bruising varies between patient and depends on many factors which can not be fully explained. Some patients will not bruise after a facelift while others may bruise significantly. The amount of bruising is also independent on the type of facelift performed. Even mini facelift procedures can produce bruising.

Can I drive myself home after a facelift? Even with office facelift procedures performed with local anesthesia, it is not a good idea to drive yourself home. You should have someone who can help you for at least the first twenty four hours after any significant cosmetic procedure.

How long is surgery? Facelift surgery can last from an hour to several hours. A decision for surgery shouldn't be made based solely on the amount of time surgery may take. Saving a few minutes on the day of surgery isn't worth the possibility of long term suboptimal results or scarring.
