The advancements in skin care and maintenance today are very impressive. Now people are no longer forced to live with pimples and scars. Warts and other skin problems too. Moles are not skin problems, per se, but people do find them problematic. That is why mole removal is now practiced largely.

What brings about these things we call moles? The medical name for a mole is nevus, and it is basically a dark spot or pigmented lesion on the skin. They all don't look the same because they vary in colors, sizes and shapes. They could either appear from birth as congenital moles or later in life, even when they are full-grown adults. An acquired mole is what you call one that appears later in life. The appearance of moles is something that is common in people, although in varying degrees. Physiology has a lot to answer for when it comes to the number of moles one has. Fair-skinned people, in general, tend to have more of them.

Heredity can also be blamed for it. The large number of moles in my cousin can be explained by the similarly large number of moles that her mother, my aunt, has. They are called as atypical or dysplastic moles. The appearance of atypical or dysplastic moles on the skin can also be blamed on the skin being exposed too long to the sun.

Moles do not appear in one particular area of the body, either. A few might appear in one random area, while many more could appear in another. My cousin is free of any facial moles. But the concentration of moles is around her neck and upper chest area. It wasn't only until recently that she found out she can actually undergo mole removal procedures to get rid of them.

What is the reason behind people looking to remove their moles? For all intents and purposes, moles are simple anomalies or dermal irregularities. Unless you are Cindy Crawford and the moles actually enhanced your appearance -they even call it beauty mark in such cases -then you should most definitely keep the moles. But they are a rare breed, and we couldn't all be Cindy Crawford. Lesser mortals -that's us -are unlucky enough to be saddled with moles that are far from flattering. We would have to get rid of them.

Getting rid of moles is not purely appearance-driven. Some moles actually pose the risk of melanoma or skin cancer. Melanoma is by far the most deadly skin disease. Even moles that seem to be harmless in the beginning can gradually turn into cancerous moles as time passes. This is especially feared by those who have many moles all over the body.

In order to reassure yourself that your moles are safe from cancer, you would have to reinforces your observation by a doctor's diagnosis. Once they are proven to be dangerous, you should immediately take the initial steps to choosing a mole removal method that will work for you. There are many removal creams or lotions that are tried and tested to be safe and effective, or you could undergo surgery. The type of mole and the stage of the cancer risk will largely determine the treatment that you will choose.
