Being overweight may also increase your chance of suffering from slipped discs since the discs must support the additional weight. On the other hand, weaker muscles and living a sedentary lifestyle also increase the likelihood of slipped discs. At the same time, as people get older and advance in age, they often suffer from this condition. This is because these discs start losing the protective water. The result is that the disks slide out of its place easily.

Generally, there are symptoms that indicate slipped discs. One such symptom is experiencing leg or arm pain. If the disc is herniated in lower back, a person experiences great pain in the thigh, calf, buttocks, and in part of foot. However, when the disc has slipped in your neck, there is intense pain in your shoulders and the arm. The pain may go to the arm or the leg whenever you cough, move the spine to a certain direction or sneeze.

During the diagnoses of disc herniation, the doctor performs physical examination to determine the origin of the pain and discomfort. Diagnosis involve checking muscle strength and nerve function, and whether the pain is experienced when you touch or move the affected area. The doctor can also perform other tests such as CT scans, X-rays, discograms, and MRI scans.
