How to Beat Non-allergic Rhinitis

Natural treatments and remedies are an extremely effective way of relieving the symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis.

Non-allergic rhinitis is the medical term given to a runny or stuffy nose not caused by allergies that won't get better or the symptoms come back repeatedly.

Certain things can trigger the sinus passages to become inflamed which subsequently causes the symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis such as;- chemical fumes, smog, tobacco smoke, perfume odours, temperature and humidity changes, common cold virus, spicy food, beer and other types of alcohol, drugs such as beta blockers, anti-inflammatories, sedatives, oral contraceptives, using decongestant nasal sprays longer than the prescribed period, stress, pregnancy and other changes in hormone levels, hypothyroidism.

The symptoms commonly include;- runny nose and post nasal drip, blocked sinuses, sinus pain and pressure, sinus headaches. There are many other symptoms however these are the main ones.

Many people with non-allergic rhinitis have found these natural treatments and remedies extremely effective at relieving their symptoms.

Nasal sprays (natural) - There are a variety of natural nasal sprays such as SinuSoothe, Sinus Buster and Sinol which are all effective for rhinitis. However probably the best of the lot is SinuSoothe, it is the most pleasant to use and offers a wider range of benefits. It even kills sinus infections. It is doctor recommended and contains clinically proven ingredients.

Saline sprays - Sterimar in particular is popular for relieving a blocked nose, removing sinus irritants and moisturizing dry/crusty nasal passages. Isotonic or hypertonic saline solutions are available and it is of prime importance to ensure the saline nasal spray does not contain harsh chemicals which may irritate your sinuses further.

Irrigation of nasal passages - Using either an isotonic or hypertonic solution, this is administered to the sinus passages using a neti-pot or similar device. The sheer quantity of saline used can effectively relieve nasal congestion and remove irritants.

Anti-histamines (natural) - These can be effective for some non-allergic rhinitis sufferer's. Butterbur and stinging nettle in particular can be used in lieu of otc anti-histamines and have been clinically proven to be just as effective.

Anti-inflammatories (natural) - Turmeric, ginger, omega 3 oils and vitamin C are all excellent natural alternatives to ibuprofen, aspirin etc. They do not cause the same undesirable side effects and by reducing inflammation they can reduce rhinitis symptoms.

Boosting immune system - It is well documented that boosting the immune system can regulate the body's inflammatory response and may be useful for non-allergic rhinitis sufferers. Vitamins, diet, exercise, sleep and stress reduction all play an important role.

Avoid the triggers - You should avoid whatever triggers your rhinitis such as strong odours, tobacco smoke etc. whenever it is practical to do so.
