Purchasing Needed New Cat Supplies

By Robert Baker

A furry new feline member of the family is a cause for celebration. But you'll need to make sure that you have some necessary new cat supplies before the new kitty gets home, because life will be harder for both you and the cat if you don't.

Cats really don't need too much from us, but the things that they do need are requirements. A collar with tag, a litter box with a scoop, litter, food, and dishes are the basics. Scratching posts and toys can help keep kitty away from your furniture, so these are a good idea, too.

A collar with a tag might not seem necessary if your cat is going to be an indoor cat, but it will help ensure that you get your furry feline back if he or she dashes out the door at some point. And litter boxes seem superfluous for cats that will be allowed outdoors, but during the night and when the weather is nasty, he or she will appreciate a place to go indoors.

All cats need food and water dishes. These should be sturdy and easy to clean, and they should be separate. The adjoined two dishes-in-one are cute, but impractical when the water needs replacing, but not the food, or vice-versa. Cats that eat only one type of food need only one food dish, but those who eat both wet and dry will benefit from two, because the wet food will spoil faster than the dry.

Buy a type of food that you want to feed your cat long-term. If you know what your cat has been eating up until now, buy some of that and switch over slowly, by mixing the old with the new in gradually increasing amounts. This will help keep your cat from getting an upset tummy because of the change.

Do your homework before getting your new cat, to make sure that you are prepared for the commitment. If the preparation seems like too much work, then you probably aren't ready for the pet, so consider it carefully. Well-cared for cats can be part of your household for decades, so they will need a lot of your time.
