There are over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke. 43 are considered especially poisonous. The health risks associated with this possibly sparked the invention of the e-cigarette in 2003 by Hon Lik. Knowing how e cigarettes work enables smokers to consider smoking without the adverse long-term side effects experienced with conventional smoking.

Electronic cigarettes are available in two, three, or four part designs. The mouth piece, or cartridge, contains a sensor that is triggered by air pressure when airflow increases during inhalation. A heating element, or atomizer, found in the cartridge changes the nicotine solution into a dense smoke-like vapor. The longer middle section contains a re-chargeable lithium-ion battery together with an electronic logic board. The battery powers the heating element. The electronics co-ordinates the device's overall functioning. This also includes the glowing LED tip.

The liquid used contains ingredients called propylene glycol, or glycerin. These harmless substances hold water making them suitable for any vapor producing applications such as nebulizers, humidifiers, or even asthma sprays. The thick white mist is drawn into the user's mouth and lungs where nicotine is absorbed through membranes lining these areas.

There are different flavored e-cigarette juices which contain a variety of different nicotine strengths ranging from having none present to an extra high dose. These descriptions translate into amounts from 0 mg through to 36 mg. The latter is comparable to the quantity inhaled in a normal puff of tobacco smoke.

The two-part design is more hygienic and straight forward to use. This is due to the entire cartridge being replaced when empty. Each new cartridge contains a new atomizer so there will not be a problem with clogging. The older devices may clog. In addition, leaking and the chance of the solution getting onto the user's skin is minimized.

Mouth pieces that are re-used may either be topped up, or have new juice-dampened pads fitted. This process is sometimes found to be a frustrating one since the components are very small. The cartridges are also at risk of becoming contaminated with bacteria if used for extended periods.

The older three-piece design requires assembling more parts. This device also provides less white gas as evidenced during exhalation. Filling up with the liquid can result in a mess. It may also take too long for anyone who wishes to enjoy a hassle-free smoke. Some smokers simply want to put the device to their lips, and draw in the vapor without any bother.

The three piece electronic cigarette also sports a heavier battery, and is said to poorly resemble its traditional counterpart. The battery does not stay charged as long as the newer two piece design. A heavy user may need to re-charge every three hours, while a light user may survive the day without needing to recharge.

This alternative method of smoking is one that drops the risk typically associated with the traditional habit. Knowing how e cigarettes work has contributed to their popularity. Their 'virtual smoke' has 1,000 times less cancer-forming substances present, and they allow for an easy transition from unhealthy tobacco to a chemical free, more socially acceptable alternative.
