While there are many structural injuries that can affect the spine, one of the most difficult to heal is that of a herniated disc. These injuries require longer to heal than most other conditions for which chiropractors offer care. A Grand Rapids chiropractor may be able to provide the help that is needed.

Discs take longer to heal as they have no direct blood supply. Discs only receive their nutrition and oxygen bythe movement of the vertebrae above and below them. This causes blood to pump from the bones to the disc. However, muscle spasms can stop this pumping action.

To heal correctly, discs should receive attention from the chiropractic doctor. He will start by making a manual exam of the spine to locate the source of the pain. If the source is determined to be a herniated disc, the doctor works with the patient to develop a therapy plan. The plan is often the key to a speedy recovery and also reduces pain associated with the condition.

Spinal discs contain two very different tissues. The outer layer is hard, strong and flexible. The inner one is fluid and gelatinous. Small cracks may develop over time in the outer layer allowing the more fluid inner one to spill outside the shell. This condition is known as a herniated disc.

When humans use proper lifting techniques, the chances of rupturing a disc are very slim. In fact, when the spine is kept straight during heavy lifting, it is more likely one would fracture a bone than rupture the disc. However, when discs are subjected to twisting forces they are not as strong and more likely to rupture.

Individuals who receive help from a Grand Rapids chiropractor may suffer less from ruptured discs. The use of adjustments, massage therapy, moist heat and gentle stretching to help alleviate the pain. Proper care is essential to prevent developing arthritis.
