Developments On Ongoing Bladder Cancer Research

By Miranda Sweeney

Bladder which is an organ located in the lower abdomen of the body is usually hollow in shape. It is normally stores urine. Urine is a bi product that is produced after blood is filtered by the kidney. Bladder cancer initially starts from inside the bladder and proceeds to grow into walls of the bladder. This ailment has killed many people which have prompted bladder cancer research.

At the moment, impressive research is being conducted by very many institutions. These include universities and medical institutions among other institutions from all parts of the world. One ongoing research is on creating an understanding on genetic changes found in it. Scientist have gone further and differentiated the differences found between cancer causing cells as well as the normal cells.

Further, researchers would also want to know the impact of these differences that do make these tumor cells to grow bigger and then spread to other body parts. This research shows that changes that are in the DNA of a cell that maybe could help researchers to predict the outlook of tumor infected patients can also affect treatment.

Position emission tomography scan. This is an ongoing research that indicates that a PET scan can possibly find the spread of tumor better MRL or even CT. PET scan is able to create pictures of tissues and organs inside the body. It requires the injection of a small radioactive sugar substance in a body of patient. This sugar will be taken up by those cells that normally use more energy. Cancer will absorb more of the radioactive substance since it usually uses energy a lot more actively. The scanner detects this substance and will produce pictures. These images will show the inner part of the body.

Urine tests are being carried out to investigate the tumor. These tests are aimed at establishing the presence of any substance that can be of help in showing a person with such a tumor. These tests are helpful in trying to diagnose this tumor. Also this is aimed at looking for cases in which patients are getting this tumor even after being treated for the first time.

Research is also done on how to reduce the risk of this tumor recurring back. A major blow to people with or have had tumor is that is they are at a great risk for development of a different tumor in other parts of their urinary tract or even in the bladder.

Studies want to establish if this risk can be reduced by use of a drug, certain foods or even any dietary supplements. Researchers also want to see if newer types of vaccines can boost the immune system of a body and probably lower the risk of the tumor coming back for a second time.

Lastly, there is target therapy. It focuses on genes, proteins and also tissue environment aiding the growth ant survival of cancer. This target to block spread of an already infected tumor cell and the damage they can cause to other cells
