Automobile accidents, especially rear end collisions, cause whiplash injuries. An adult is hurt the same way an infant is hurt when shaken. In the case of the adult, it need not be fatal. However, as a prominent Redondo Beach Chiropractor confirms, there can be acute pain right after the crash or stiffness and pain that may not show up until days or even weeks go by.

The human spinal column is made up of thirty-three vertebrae. Seven of these small hollow bones are located in the neck. The entire back is always examined because the spine functions as a unit. For that reason, the entire spine is evaluated following the accident.

In addition to a visual exam, palpation is used. This is a way of examining the vertebrae using the hands. It works to evaluate the bones, the joints and any tenderness that may be contributing to pain. An x-ray provides another evaluative tool.

Every individual can react differently to a whiplash accident. Some feel acute pain right away. Others do not feel pain for days or sometimes weeks. Ice packs and wearing a cervical collar are suggested for a short time only. Complete and extended bed rest is not considered beneficial.

For the acute case, gentle stretches are soothing. After the pain subsides somewhat, a series of spinal adjustments can be started. Prior to any care being applied, however, the client must be evaluated. After that, a care plan can be initiated.

There is more than one method available to alleviate pain caused by a whiplash injury. They include the flexion-distraction, manual joint stretching, and an instrument-assisted adjustment. The chiropractor will recommend one that will benefit you. It will be explained how each technique works.

Spinal adjustments have proven to be successful in alleviating the pain of whiplash. The best care method will be recommended depending on your age, the state of your health, and how severe your pain is. Massage is often used concomitantly. Both can be provided in one scheduled office appointment.
