If someone experiences numbness in the index, middle finger and thumb it may be an early sign of carpal tunnel syndrome. These symptoms do not extend to the little finger and the feeling is not constant. The hand is weak and the individual starts to drop things. An appointment with a Charlotte Chiropractor should be made to plan care for this condition which is caused by compression of the median nerve.

The disorder, named for the median nerve, compresses that nerve as it passes through the tunnel between forearm and hand. During normal function it activates muscles around the thumb. When compressed, the transmission of nerve signals is obstructed, causing pain and weakness in the hand. Chiropractic care methods are reportedly successful in alleviating the pain caused by this disorder.

Your first appointment with the chiropractor will be spent doing an evaluation. A physical examination of your wrist, an x-ray and range of motion testing can confirm carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a common disorder because the wrist is narrow making compression more likely.

It is twice as common in women as men. This is probably due to women having smaller stature in general and narrow tunnel passageways specifically. According to scientific research studies part of the cause may be misaligned vertebrae in the neck and upper back.

The recommended care may include upper back and cervical adjustments. Rest, cold applications to the wrist and immobilizing it temporarily by wearing a splint may be added as well. Some clients respond well to a non-strenuous exercise program. Each case is unique and care is tailored to be most beneficial for each individual.

The research studies done on those who had corrective surgery for carpal tunnel reported a failure rate of over fifty percent. Some women who underwent surgery twice were still unable to work due to ongoing pain. Not surprisingly, chiropractic methods of care are gaining in popularity for pain alleviation from this all too common condition.
