Applying Self Tanning Spray Properly

By Haywood Hunter

Self tanning spray can be a safe and effective way to get a healthy looking glow. Since it has been proven that excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer, a self tanning spray is a good alternative to tanning. These products were first introduced in the sixties; however, they have improved considerably since then.

Overuse of self tanning spray can produce a tan that is more orange than the sun-kissed glow usually associated with tanning. When these products were first introduced, an orange glow was the norm, however, they have changed a lot since then. If used in the proper manner, self tanning spray creates a beautiful tan look without the associated UV exposure.

Self tanning spray contains a chemical called DHA, which is created from a colorless sugar known as glycerin. This chemical interacts with the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin on the body, producing the color change that simulates a tan. A self tanning spray must be continually used, however, because the dead skin cells do flake off from the body, causing the tan to fade. Most fake tans will last about a week without maintenance.

When using lotions, it can be difficult to get even coverage. However, this can be prevented by using a self tanning spray. Sprays allow the product to be applied evenly on the skin, preventing a patchy or blotchy look.

To get the most even look possible, exfoliation should take place before applying a self tanning spray, either with a scrub or a loofah. Care should be taken not to get the product on sensitive areas, such as lips or eyes. Also, apply the self tanning spray sparingly to elbows and knees, these usually have more dead cells and will appear darker if a light touch is not used.

Even though self tanning spray gives the appearance of a tan, it does not offer any protection from the sun and harmful UV rays. A good sunscreen should still be used when exposure to the sun will occur. Self tanning spray will give the user the peace of mind from knowing they are not risking cancerous exposure, while still getting a great look that lasts for days.
