Skin that is not healthy can easily acquire various kinds of skin conditions. No matter what skin type you have, it's possible for you to suffer from skin damage if you do not know how to care for your skin by protecting it against several factors. Such factors that cause skin damage are everywhere, and if you learn what those factors are and understand how they can harm your skin, you have a higher chance of avoiding skin problems.

The most important thing you have to realize when it comes to skin health is that the sun is the most damaging factor your skin will ever face. It's true that the skin needs a certain amount of sunlight in order to function properly but excessive exposure to the sun is actually the main cause of several skin conditions. The sun emits ultraviolet rays, and once those rays come in contact with the skin, they penetrate deep and produce damage into the layer where collagen and elastin are located. The damage done to these connective tissues eventually leads to sagging and wrinkling.

Too much smoking and drinking are the next most skin damaging factors. Nicotine that is contained in tobacco smoke can promote poor blood circulation making your face look sallow. On the other hand, alcohol dilates blood vessels and damages them. Furthermore, chemicals contained in both tobacco and alcohol can attack the fibers that connect skin tissues, and disrupt the production of collagen and elastin. This leads to skin dryness and premature skin aging.

Aside from too much exposure to the sun and to bad health habit, another major factor that contributes to skin damage is stress. People under severe stress can experience hormonal fluctuations in the body, which is the main reason for acne breakouts. Some researchers also claim that if the skin is under stress, it cannot absorb antioxidants and other helpful ingredients from skin care products that you use.

Furthermore, if you are not a fan of exercise, you will also have a high chance of developing unhealthy skin. The same way goes if you don't get enough beauty rest and sleep. These two activities are very essential to the body, and in this case, your skin. Exercise regulates blood circulation, while sleep allows the body to heal damages done by environmental factors. In addition, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep help boost the immune system, helping your skin ward off any kind of disease.

Preventing skin damage is not at all difficult, as long as you are familiar with the basic factors that contribute to it. To maintain the health of your skin, simply minimize your exposure to these harmful factors. Before going out of the house, apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher to protect your skin against UV rays. Also, make some lifestyle changes by getting rid of your bad health habits like smoking and drinking. Moreover, as much as possible, get enough exercise and sleep every day. As you do this, you will reduce stress in your life at the same time. That should leave you with skin that is healthy, beautiful, and younger-looking.
