When people are not well, either mentally or physically, they tend to see a professional, such as a psychologist or a doctor. They expect medication or treatment that will make things better, preferably quickly. An increasing number of people believe, however, that it is perfectly possible to heal oneself. This movement towards personal healing is partly a spiritual move, but also because more and more people realize that that the complications from invasive treatment and side effects from medication can be dangerous.

The philosophy of self curing has nothing to do with home remedies, herbal medicines or over the counter drugs administered at home. Instead, it is a belief that individuals truly have the mind power to cure themselves of any illness, whether it is mental or physical. It is simply a matter of learning how to unleash that power and how to direct it in order to cure oneself.

Supporters of this philosophy believes that the body is surrounded by an energy field, sometimes called the aura. When there are blockages that causes this energy field to become depleted, or even if excessive energy is directed at the body, illness is the result. The only solution is to then repair the energy field around the body and this will help the body to heal itself.

Faith is very important in the process. Once the power of the mind has been directed towards a disease it is important to have absolute faith in the process. Some people find it very difficult to maintain their faith. Therapists active in this field say that it is perfectly possible to believe unconditionally. They point to the example set by devout Christians or Muslims, for example.

In order to take control over the power of the mind it is necessary to be at peace with oneself, to be happy and content and to live a balanced life style. To achieve this state of being, many people take up disciplines like meditation, yoga and reiki to help them focus on their inner strength, to identify the areas where they need to grow and to increase their focus and concentration.

It is not only the inner being that needs to be developed and nurtured. The earthly body and the mind must be in perfect balance. It is therefore necessary to follow a healthy diet, to exercise regularly, to enjoy quality sleep and to deal with stress in a healthy manner. Good physical health, combined with inner contentment and a healthy self image is necessary to fully use the power of the mind.

Bookshops, libraries and the internet offer a bewildering variety of self help options. Most beginners, however, prefer to get help, at least initially, from a therapist, teacher or counsellor that specializes in this field. In most cases it is necessary to experiment for a while until the ideal disciplines and routines are discovered. A teacher can help beginners to remain focused and disciplined.

There are many critics of this philosophy but the fact remains that the move towards self curing is growing at a tremendous pace. More and more people do not want to submit themselves to the dangers of complications and side effects that are inherent to invasive treatment and the use of drugs. In short, they want to be in control of their lives.
