There are differing reasons why women consider enlargement of breasts. There are those that do it because they have small breasts and are not comfortable with them that way. Small breasts may be as a result of the effects of weight reduction or also pregnancy. Some people also have small breasts naturally. When breasts are not of the same size, one may have to be enlarged so that symmetry is achieved. Women who have had breast cancer surgery are also common patients of enlargement. In considering breast augmentation anchorage residents ought to know details about the procedure.

The implants that are used are manufactured from the outer layers of firm silicone. These get filled with either salty water or silicone gel. Prior to the surgical procedure, the surgeon has to discuss the type, shape and size of implants that best suit the particular individual. The implants are manufactured to last at least ten years, though they normally last for longer than this.

It normally is possible for women to breastfeed with the implants. There have been no reports of silicone found in breast milk. It is however possible for the implants to have an effect on mammography. Women who have done breast augmentation should inform radiographers in advance before they go for screening. Before deciding to go for augmentation, the family physician should be consulted as they may help with choosing the best hospitals or surgeons for the procedure.

The surgeons discuss what will happen before, during and after the procedure, in addition to any pain that may be experienced. It is also during the meeting with the surgeon that one may ask any questions they may have or have any concerns addressed. The final decision to undergo the procedure is made by the individual, and they may be required to sign a consent form.

Proper preparation is required for the surgery. Smokers are supposed to stop smoking some months before the procedure. Smoking is known to lengthen the period of recovery. There should be no eating or drinking six hours before the operation. The surgery is done under general anesthesia, thus the patient will be unconscious. It may be an outpatient procedure or at times one may be required to sleep over at the hospital.

There needs to be measurement of the breasts and assessment of their shapes. This is in addition to the examination of the nipples and skin adjacent to the breasts. Markings are made to mark out the operation site. It is the norm for surgeons to take photographs of the breasts both before and after augmentation for purposes of comparison. The images taken are confidential.

It is important to prevent clotting of blood in veins. This is achieved through wearing of compression stockings. The other option would be to give the patients anti-clotting injections which are equally effective. The surgery takes a short time- one or two hours. Implants are placed either on top of chest muscles or under them.

Just like is the case with all surgical operations, there are risks that should be expected. These include discomfort, excessive bleeding, and swelling of breasts, among others. The complications are different for different persons. It should however be noted that these risks and complications are rarely experienced.
