Back pain is all-too common, and most people will experience it at some point in life. Along with neck pain and headaches, it one of the most widespread sources of recurrent or persistent pain in the US. It is also one of the most common reasons why workers have to take time off. A Fargo chiropractor can ease back pain considerably and help sufferers regain precious quality of life.

Back pain can have a number of different causes and is often due to a combination of factors. During an initial examination, a chiropractor will ask the patient about his or her lifestyle and medical history in order to determine which of these factors are at play. They can be things like muscle strain, injury or overuse, but can also be conditions of the spine.

Common conditions seen by chiropractors are osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and herniated discs. Whatever the underlying cause, an analysis needs to be made. This may start with a hands-on examination and simple movement and range-of-motion tests, and may also involve standard neurological and orthopedic tests.

When a analysis has been made, the chiropractor will discuss care options with the patient. The care given will be tailored to the needs of the individual and can involve a number of therapies. These may include the traditional chiropractic procedures of spinal adjustment and mobilization, but may also include complimentary modalities.

Spinal adjustment is a way of moving the spine to correct misalignments, release any pressure on the nerves, and to ease tension in the muscles. Mobilization involves the gentle movement of joints such that their normal range of motion is restored. Both of these interventions often benefit from additional therapies like acupuncture, massage and at-home exercises.

These procedures have the great advantage of, for the most part, being painless. They are also modes of care that do not involve the use of drugs. This is one of the main reasons why chiropractic care is sought by many people who, with good reason, are skeptical of pharmaceuticals and their potentially dangerous side-effects.
