What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is actually a teeth bleaching process, which lightens stains and blemishes on the dentine and dentine. The active component in the tooth whitening gel is Carbamide Peroxide. It reacts with saliva in the mouth and penetrates the tooth enamel and dentin, changing and lightening the colour of the taints. The stains and dentin are turned whiter and whiter by the tooth whitening process till the required tooth whitening result's obtained.

How is a bleaching treatment done?

The lightening is done by putting whitening gel into an individually customised tray that is placed over the teeth. The bleaching process starts the moment you put the mouth tray over the teeth. You would then wear the tray for 3-4 hours per day or overnite for three to four weeks, dependent on how white you want your teeth.

The bleaching kit contains silicone mouth trays, a protecting box to keep the trays clean when not in use, and the bleaching gel containing Carbamide Peroxide. We routinely provide 10% and 15% density of the gel. The 10 percent is used initially - this helps to eliminate sensitiveness in the first few days, followed by a little stronger density of 15%. Your Dentist will give you full instructions regarding how to use your Kit.

How much does teeth bleaching cost?

The kits cost ?199.00 inclusive of the bleach.

Are there times when bleaching cannot be used?

Tooth whitening will only work on natural teeth and won't lighten the colour of white fillings or caps. If you'd like to talk about this further please talk to your dentist.

How should I look after my teeth after whitening?

Ease back on the amount of food and drinks which stain teeth. This can not preserve the teeth but maintain the whiteness for as long as practical.

How long do the effects last?

Tooth whitening can last for 2 to 3 years and even longer in some patients. However this may alter dependent on diet and other considerations like smoking.

Does it hurt and what are the complications?

The hydrogen peroxide gel doesn't cause any damage or damage to your teeth, gums or fillings. The treatment is completely safe and shouldn't cause the patient major agony. However , lots of folk will experience some kind of sensitiveness either during and/or after the original treatment. This is usually described by patients as a infrequent pointed shooting pain. This should settle down after roughly 48 hours.

If the pain is too uncomfortable to resume leave the trays out for 48 hours and repeat the process, again using the 10% gel.

If the agony continues after this then please consult your Dentist.
