Doctors are physicians who professionally practice medicine. This terminology may vary based on the country but is often associated with the professionals who work in the medical or health care fields. Their work is focused on promoting, maintaining and restoring the health of humans through studying, diagnosing and treating injury, disease, and other mental and physical ailments. The word doctor may also be given to individuals who have a doctorate-level degree.

In the academic industry, the term doctor is largely used to describe an individual who has earned a degree of Doctor of Philosophy or PhD. This term also applies to those who have received a research doctorate, such as Doctor of Science or ScD. Academia aside, this title is used for professionals in law and medicine, such as: Doctor of Psychology or PsyD, Doctor of Medicine or MD, Juris Doctor or JD, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or DO.

There are a variety of physicians. Typically they have a different focus when it comes to their practice. The focus may be determined by the methods of treatment applied, category of disease or kind of patient. Professionals cannot properly practice if they are without advanced knowledge on topics such as anatomy and physiology. The role and definition of a physician will vary regionally.

In order to work professionally under this title, a certain level of qualifications and degrees must be obtained. These requirements will also differ considerably by region, but there are some commonalities. Medical ethics is important in most parts of the world. It is the system of moral principles that apply judgments and values to this practice. It mandates that these professionals show benevolence, compassion and consideration for all patients.

United States law requires aspiring physicians complete four years of undergraduate studies and four years of graduate school to earn their DO or MD degrees. People who are training for a specific career, such as chiropractors, pharmacists, dentists or nurses, must complete four years of undergraduate course study as well and four years of a post-graduate program to get their degree. Training to work in medicine in the UK includes five to six years of studies or a four-year graduate entry course that is accelerated.

Doctors should be licensed to practice in their field and trained in the art of healing. In some cultures and countries, these individuals use folk medicine or folk magic. Modern doctors, in many developed societies, have received the highest degree available from a university or college and have done years of training.

Depending on their specialization, doctors may use modern technology and medicine for diagnosis or treatments. There are also professionals who practice naturopathy or utilize holistic medicine. These individuals prefer employing natural procedures to diagnose and cure patients. They also tend to have a different perspective on how the body works and its ability to self-heal.

Doctors is often used when referencing physicians who practice professionally in the field of medicine. It is also a title given to people who have the highest degree available in college or university. The job description, qualifications and definition of these professionals may differ by region.
