Importance Of Cognition Within Brain Cancer Therapy

By Robert Sutter

I believe that there are a few different concerns to talk about when it comes to brain cancer therapy. If you are looking at certain methods, you want to make sure that they are safe to where cognition is not going to be negatively impacted. It's one of those points that researchers have brought into consideration time and time again as they performed good work. It seems as though new tools may be able to help, as an article on Penn News spoke about in great detail.

The article said that there has been a new approach in the way of brain cancer therapy that may be able to help patients treat tumors within patients. This is great, of course, but knowing that cognitive function will not be negatively impacted only helps to make this that much more of a focus by organizations like Voices against Brain Cancer. The way that this is done is through chemotherapeutic wafers placed around the infected areas of the brain. Without radiation put into place, results have been rendered stronger.

It is very telling that whole brain radiation therapy has not been put to use, especially when you think about what can arise as a result. The truth of the matter is that while this is utilized in order to prevent recurrence of tumors in the brain, functions within the brain seem to decrease. Being able to lose one or more of these is worrisome. However, seeing that there are newer therapies to come down the pipeline should be enough to bring more confidence to a noble field.

The University of Pennsylvania held a study and it was conducted by those within the Perelman School of Medicine. Results were found and it was seen that 98 percent of patients did away with radiation and, with the wafers brought into place, cognition started to see stronger results. There were better findings within the three important areas: memory, executive function, and fine motor skills. Knowing this, 40 percent of patients saw improvements in memory and function alone, which was where the greatest change had been pinpointed.

There is so much information to consider when it comes to brain cancer therapy, some results standing out more than others. I believe that certain methods should be able to help the brain more so than others, keeping procedures like radiation out of the picture. These therapies should be seen as helpful to the brain, which is where a number of different tools have come into play. If this is the case, it is very likely that the best results are going to stand that much stronger.
