Is mole removal essential?

By Aaron Doolsey

There are different types of moles. Moles basically have three main categories. When you the know difference between these moles, you will realize whether to remove them or not.

If you have moles, is it a must to remove them?

This question may come across as ridiculous for some science students. It is a different case with laymen, who tend to become apprehensive upon reading about cancer-causing moles. The process of mole removal is no more a difficult one.

Earlier people were trying out a lot of home remedies or other natural techniques. However, hospitals now conduct laser surgery or excision, carried out only by skin surgeons, to remove moles. You have to have your mole diagnosed for any cancerous tendencies before signing up for a surgical procedure to remove them.

When this differentiation is understood clearly, you will find out whether a surgery is required or not. The common moles are called as nevus and they do not cause any type of skin cancer. Dysplastic nevus is similar to the common moles, but it can turn cancerous at times. Melanoma, on the other hand, is sure to cause cancer.

Their differences in moles lie in their shapes and sizes. In others, you can see the differences in border line, surface texture and overall symmetry. There are lesser chances for common moles to reappear, once they have been successfully removed. Similarly, after removing the dysplastic nevus, you cannot expect the recurrence. Melanoma, on the other hand, has possibilities of recurrence. Years after a successful excision surgery, melanoma still reappeared in some patients. Among the three forms of moles, the most harmful one is melanoma. It not only affects a single area in the body but also spreads wide to all the other regions. However, just because a mole forms in one area does not mean other areas of the body will follow suit. The surface area of normal moles is flat. They are smooth spots on your skin. They can also have raised areas or bumps in some cases.

Dysplastic nevus will also have a smooth surface, but look unsightly. They do not have a proper symmetry or shape like the common moles. In fact they have a pebbly appearance. Melanoma looks scraped. You will also find them lumpy and quite hard. In some instances, blood can ooze from them.

When you compare the shape of the moles, nevus is round and sometimes oval. There is no proper shape for dysplastic nevus. A proper shape or symmetry is also lacking in melanoma. One of the easiest ways to identify, whether a mole can turn cancerous is to observe its shape.

You should consider removing your mole if it does not have a well-define size or shape. Nevus is well separated from the skin and has a distinct contour. But melanoma has blurred edges. You will have trouble telling the mole from the skin because the notched contours blend very well with the skin tone. The contour or dysplastic nevus is the same.

Moles cannot be treated harmful always. Further, if they are located in certain spots, they are treated as beauty spots, in some cultures.

I hope this article helps you to understand various aspects of different types of moles and their characteristics.
