Fantastic Florida Biking Trails

By Patricia J Walker

Even though Florida is fairly flat, there are still plenty of places to intrigue and defy bikers of all skill levels. Some of the extra challenges this state provides are plenty of sand and mud (due to the high rainfall). You might even have to watch out for a gator or two!

Select from 5 miles of trails at Sun 'N' Lakes Park by Sebring. Beginners and more seasoned bikers alike will enjoy the view as these trails traverse over the rolling hillside. If it rains, the muddy trails will be a great challenge for experienced bikers, but there are also fire breaks, dry trail areas, and obstacles more suited to less experienced bikers to enjoy, as well. There's something here for everyone. But better bring enough bug spray for everyone, too! The insects can be bad in the heat of summer.

Balm Boyette is a great place for beginners to hone their skills. There are about 16-20 miles of various trails to choose from. Most of them are fairly flat, but with a few technical things like roots, sand, and rocks to make it challenging. The trails are fairly well marked, but it wouldnt hurt to have a map. Dont let the beginner status fool you! Bring plenty of water, because youll be in for quite a workout!

Set atop what was previously a landfill, Dryer Park boasts several diverse trails. Located not far from West Palm Beach, trail one goes up and down the old landfill hill for three miles of intense riding. Sharp inclines and turns make it exciting for bikers who want to experience a challenge. Trail two encompasses the park's perimeter with more technical trails leading from it, along with some gravel roads and some paved, but use caution because these trails are also shared by riders on horseback. This is a great trail for riders with some experience who want to build their skills.

Fort Clinch, by Fernandina, is a great attraction and provides bathroom facilities and vending machines which is a nice plus. While admission is $5, many bikers park their vehicles by the beach and just come in on their bikes to avoid the expense. The trails encompass 7 miles of great bike riding including technical challenges like trees, sand, leaves, mud, stumps, and tree roots to navigate and a plethora of turns, twists, ups, and downs to keep things interesting. Be sure to watch for the signs and stay on the bike trail, though. The trail heads off in different directions at some points, and it can be easy to get confused.

Roller coaster drops, finger loops, jumps, and six miles of hard packed trails make a loop not far from Lakeland. The Carter Road trail is a fantastic, exhilarating ride near what used to be a phosphate mine years ago. Keep your eyes open for alligators, too!

If you're in good shape and want to tackle steep hills and technical challenges, head over to Alafia where you'll find 10 miles of exciting and well kept trails. This trail also has restrooms and a parking fee-usually $2-$4-but it's worth it. Get a map of the area, though, before you head out, because sometimes the trails aren't marked clearly and can get confusing.

Hopefully something here will be just what youre looking for regardless of your experience level. Just dont forget to keep well-hydrated in this hot climate. As always, happy trails! - 27772
