Cruelty Free Beauty With Vegan Cosmetics

By Dianna Harper

People who do not consume animal products can now enjoy beauty products with a clear conscience, by using vegan cosmetics. These natural, cruelty free products will make you look just as beautiful as standard make up and beauty products, but do not cause any suffering to animals.

Vegans believe that it is wrong to use any part of an animal's body in the production of food or other products to be used by humans. Veganism involves not only eliminating meat, dairy and eggs from the diet, but also making an effort to not consume animal products in any area of life.

Buying cosmetics can be a difficult task for a strict vegan, as many contain animal ingredients that are not obviously marked on the label. Still more products have been tested on animals, which most vegans object to. It can be difficult to know which cosmetics are vegan friendly. The best advice is to look at the label for the Vegan Society's Trademark, or an explicit declaration that the product is suitable for vegans.

When you look at the label, there are a number of commonly used animal ingredients that you should look out for. A wide range of ingredients commonly used in cosmetics come from animals. These include shellac, a red dye made from crushed beetles, which is often added to nail varnish. Lipstick usually contains either lanolin or beeswax. Keratin, a protein that comes from hooves, horns or feathers, is often used in shampoos and conditioners.

By far the most widely used animal product in cosmetic manufacturing is gelatin, which is made from the bones or hides of animals such as cows and pigs. Manufacturers use gelatin to make their product have the correct consistency. Vegans should check the label of all creams, lotions and gels to see whether gelatin is an ingredient.

Despite the wide usage of all of these ingredients, there are alternatives available. For example, plant-based oils and waxes can be used in the manufacture of make up, face creams and moisturizers. There are now several companies catering to vegans by offering cruelty free products.

Animal testing is still used by some manufacturers, although it is banned in some countries. A common test involves applying a substance to rabbits' eyes to test whether the product causes irritation or damage. Rabbits cannot easily wash irritants out of their eyes because of their lack of tear ducts, which means that the rabbit is left to suffer a lot of pain and irritation. Tests can last for hours or even days. Products that have not been tested on animals will usually say so on the label.

The availability of vegan cosmetics means that animal lovers can enjoy using make up and other products with a clear conscience. Although the use of animal products is widespread, with a little research it is possible to avoid them.
