A Face-Off With Acne Scars

By Mavic Gardner

The encumbrance of dealing with acne can affect an individual's health and sense of well-being. Many of us have not been spared from a sad case of acne in our youth. We lived with the pimples and were forced to accept the inevitable scarring the reddish pustules left behind.

Dirt and sebum can clog skin pores, making a habitat welcoming to bacterial growth. The bacteria , in turn, cause skin breakouts (e.g., pimples).

After the papules clear up, scars often remain as a reminder of those embarrassing pimples. Some acne scars disappear as time elapses. Nevertheless, some acne scars will not fade, and we are left with the feeling that we are somehow imperfect.

Acne scarrings have 4 basic types. Rolling scars are hollows with a broad, shallow depth. Ice pick scars are like scores on the surface of the skin. The raised-surface type could either be a keloidal or hypertrophic scar. Acne scars located on the sides of the head or the cheeks are called boxcar scars, and they could be mistaken for scars left over from chickenpox.

Results of academic studies show that some people have low self-esteem and depression because of acne scars.

But there is no need to lose hope just yet. There are now several technological developments for the treatment of facial scars caused by acne. Some of these treatments use a form of laser therapy. Other treatments call for some form of skin abrasion. There are creams and subcutaneous injections available as well. Inquire from your doctor about the best acne scar eradication and/or treatment procedure that will be viable for you.
