If you have a nail fungus, you have probably seen the ads for laser treatment of this infection of the nail. However, there are confusing claims being made and a considerable amount of confusion with regard to this treatment. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of a nail fungus laser.

Currently, there are two companies who are competing in the marketplace for lasers to treat nail fungus. Nomir Medical technologies should have their laser operational in a couple of months and the Pinpoint laser by Patholase is already on the market.

Although nobody will make a strong recommendation until more data is available, the Neovon laser by Nomir Medical Technologies is very impressive. Nomir is waiting for FDA approval prior to putting their laser in the marketplace, unlike the Patholase Pinpoint laser. The studies that have been released so far are also impressive. The Neovon laser seen to be more effective based on the data that has been released thus far. There is practically no chance of damage to the surrounding tissue. Some experts believe that this permits a more effective treatment of nail fungus with less chance of complications and better outcomes. Light energy kills the nail fungus without creating any heat that can cause damage to the surrounding tissue and skin which is left uninjured as a result of the unique controlled technology that is used by the Neovon laser.

While the Pinpoint was marketed first, many experts are quite skeptical about the claims that they make with regard to curing nail fungus. There isn't any good data that supports the claims that this laser can actually cure main fungus. Also, this laser hasn't been FDA approved for treating nail fungus in the US. In addition, the Pinpoint laser uses heat in the form of high energy ultraviolet radiation. This could result in complications with this treatment in the form of burns to surrounding tissue. As a result of the high cost that is associated with this treatment and the lack of data demonstrating its effectiveness , many experts are recommending that their patients to avoid this treatment for the time being.

You should delay your treatment of nail fungus until the Neovon laser becomes available. Both laser treatments will probably cost you as much as $1200 or less depending on how many nails you need treated. The laser treatment is painless. Most patients will have to undergo three treatments with each one lasting approximately no more than 20 minutes.
