How To Exercise With Kettlebells

By Mike Sherman

What in the world are kettlebells? The answer actually isn't that complicated. While they may be incorrectly referred to as cattle bells or kettle balls, they are an antiquated version of weights, a piece of workout equipment that is staging a comeback.

However, that doesn't quite answer the question at hand. First used in Russia, with the name of "giryas," they look like large balls. They instantly grew in fame and took Europe by storm during the days of the strongmen. If you look for images of Sandow Klein, and other strongmen from his time, you can see them using kettlebells to train and build their large muscles.

Kettlebells are making a drastic comeback in the strength training world today. Kettlebell trainers who workout with the weights on their own are pushing for others who are interested in gaining strength and getting in good shape to use them. A couple of the strongest backers for kettlebell training, Russian trainers Pavel Tsatsouline and Valery Fedorenko, want to educate the whole world on how effective kettlebells can be not only professionally but personally as well.

So the next question to ask is "How can I use kettlebell training to work out?" The answer lies in the versatility of the weights. From sit-ups, swings, push-ups, and so on, there are a wide range of exercises you can try with kettlebells. While there are hundreds of sites out there with their own kettlebell training sessions, spanning from beginner to advanced, the important thing to keep in mind is safety. After a strenuous workout, the sweat on your hands will make it difficult to grip the handle. It could potentially lead to severe injury if you are using kettlebells and drop them on your foot, your head or any other part of your body. So no matter how you go about with kettlebell training, always stop occasionally to wipe the sweat off your hands or wear wrist wraps.

There are plenty more articles that can explain what kettlebells are and go further into detail about kettlebell training. She has an abundance of resources to assist those who want to learn more. However, the best option is to try kettlebells yourself to find out if they're the best equipment for you.
