Trigeminal neuralgia is also known as Prosopalgia or the suicide disease. It is also called as the Fothergill's disease. Those who have Trigeminal neuralgia will surely face pain in their face. The trigeminal nerve is a cranial nerve and it contains three branches. That is what it owes its name to. The three branches are the maxillary nerve, mandibular nerve and the ophthalmic nerve. It could be that one of these nerves becomes severely affected. In some cases, it could be all three nerves that become affected. Thus, you have to choose a treatment method that is even more effective than usual. Sensitive nerves require careful handling, thus a very skilled and competent neurosurgeon would have to be sought to perform the treatments.

Trigeminal neuralgia could also mean having pain on both sides of the face for some people. In some patients, the pain is more palpable in their ears while some would have the most pain in their cheeks or forehead. Sometimes they could also feel pain in their scalp, jaws and teeth. The method or option that would be used to treat the pain would have a lot to do with where the pain is actually being experienced the most. You could experience an episode where one side of your face is besieged with pain. This could last for several seconds. It is possible for you to experience dozens and even hundreds of these episodes of pain that will last for several seconds. Thus you can imagine the amount of stress that is faced by the face. This pain can happen in the form of a cycle. Thus in a month, it might get repeated several times in a regular pattern. This pain will get more severe over time.

Dealing with simple tasks such as talking, yawning or singing would become truly difficult. When people suffering from Trigeminal neuralgia start shaving, they might even leave some areas, without shaving. Sensation could be lacking in some areas, but it could prove to be too sensitive in others. The air current could shift and the wind pattern could change even in the slightest way, but the pain would be intense. You should seek immediate attention if you experience pain for a prolonged period. Often, people take anticonvulsant drugs and undergo radiosurgeries as treatments. Loud pitch noise or even hard chewing can aggravate the pain. These pain attacks will be like the pain felt during an explosion or an electric shock. The pain could be initially felt on one end of the trigeminal nerve.

If left unchecked, the pain will spread to the extremities over time. The trigeminal nerve is considered to be a crucial nerve in the body. It is involved in sensory nerve jobs like helps in tactition and thermoception. Few of the motor functions are also controlled by this nerve. The muscles which are required for chewing is closely associated with this nerve. That is the main reason why a lot of pain and agony will be involved when a person with Trigeminal neuralgia tries to chew something. The entire jaw line will face the pain.

In case of a short term compression, the effect will be lesser than usual. However, demyelination would be the result in the case of long term compression. The axon potential could also be affected. If a person is having a problem with multiple sclerosis, Trigeminal neuralgia is also a possibility. Postherpetic neuralgia might also result in Trigeminal neuralgia. Not being able to control it does not mean it is completely unmanageable.
