General Information About Liposuction Surgery

By Janelle Burnett

There are numerous techniques for toning up, losing weight and achieving a desired figure. Most people employ a combination of regular exercise and healthy eating. However, there are cases where stubborn pockets of fat appear that no amount of dieting or exercise can eliminate. Liposuction surgery or fat removal surgery helps to remove these persistent fats and reshape the affected areas of the body. Contrary to a common belief, it is not designed to be used as a quick weight loss technique.

The success of the procedure depends on a number of factors. To achieve maximum results it is important to gather critical information to be well informed about this treatment process before undergoing it. Consulting an experienced surgeon is essential. They carry out an examination of the various areas and provide information concerning the expected results. They also provide information on the various types, charges and possible risks.

Not everyone is eligible for the fat removal procedure. To qualify for the procedure individuals are required to be above 18 years, in proper health, and be under exercise and dieting program. Other factors that affect eligibility are infections, diabetes and any complications of the heart and the circulatory system. There is a set limit of fat that can be eliminated from the body without causing any complications hence overweight individuals may be ineligible.

It is performed under local or general anaesthetic with sedation. It is treated as a day case and lasts between one and two hours depending on the area under treatment and the amount of fat deposits being removed. The surgeon makes a small incision in the affected region and then inserts a cannula or thin plastic tube. The end of the thin tube is attached to a vacuum device that removes the fat deposits quickly and efficiently.

It is common in cosmetic surgery where is it is performed to achieve a specified physique. The common body parts where it is used include the abdomen, buttocks and the back. Others are thighs, calves, upper arms, face, neck flab and knees. In combination with other techniques, it yields excellent results. To regain their pre-pregnancy body shapes, mothers undergo mommy makeover.

The various variations of liposuction are abdominal etching, water-assisted, laser based, ultra-sound assisted and tumescent. Although the process may vary the steps involved have little or no variation. The equipment employed helps to achieve the desired results.

Surgeries have always been associated with numerous risks. The risks involved in this procedure can be broadly classified into infection, bleeding and anaesthesia complications. Most of these risks are countered by taking certain safety measures both before and after the surgery. Smoking is discouraged in order to facilitate the healing of the incisions. Drugs such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications that do not contain steroids are to be avoided.

There are several benefits associated with liposuction surgery. It reshapes and slims certain areas of the body by getting rid of excess deposits of fats, improving body proportion and contours which ultimately enhance the image of an individual. Despite reasonable levels of fitness and good health, some people may have disproportionate contours on their bodies due to the presence of localized fat deposits. This may be as a result of family traits rather than the absence of appropriate weight control or fitness
