Every year, many women who are not satisfied with the size or shape of their bust-lines undergo breast augmentation surgery for a more shapely and well-proportioned look. Before deciding to have breast augmentation California patients need to make sure they have all the facts about this procedure in order to make an informed decision.

The first thing a woman must do is find a reputable and skilled cosmetic surgeon who specializes in this type of work. Factors to consider when choosing a competent surgeon include; his or her educational background, training, and certification, experience doing breast augmentation, and how comfortable the patient is with this doctor. Setting up a consultation is the next step.

During the intial visit, the cosmetic surgeon will assess the overall health and body structure of the patient, and will ask her what results she expects to get from the surgery. The doctor will then recommend the most suitable type of augmentation, cup size, and and surgical approach for the patient.

Augmentation can be accomplished in one of several ways. Saline implants contain a sterile salt-water solution and are filled to the desired size. Silicone implants are filled with a soft, moveable gel and come pre-filled in several different shapes, there are also cohesive gel silicone implants, which contain a firmer type of gel than the regular ones. Some surgeons also perform autologous fat transfer, in which fat is removed from another area of the body by liposuction and then injected into the breasts.

Placing the implant involves making an incision either on the edge of the areolas, under the breasts, or in the armpit, and inserting these forms through this opening. Implants can be positioned under the breast tissue or chest muscle tissue, but some surgeons prefer to do the latter as the former can lead to the development of hardening around the implants, known as "capsular contracture" and can sometimes make mammograms unreadable.

Under normal circumstances, this procedure is performed on an out-patient basis and does not require an overnight stay unless there are complications. It typically takes 1 or 2 hours to complete and general anesthesia is used. After surgery, the incisions on the breasts will be covered with gauze and an elastic bandage, or in some cases a special type of bra. In 7 to 10 days the stitches will be removed.

There will be some bruising, swelling, and tenderness for a few days to weeks after. Pain medications will be prescribed. It's important to avoid strenuous activities for several days and wear a supportive bra to encourage healing. There will be scars, but they are normally in areas where they will be less noticeable.

Following breast augmentation California patients can enjoy the results of the procedure for a long time. It is normal however to need the implants replaced or new fat transfers performed after about ten years, and if an implant leaks this need urgent medical attention. Various factors may affect an augmentation, such as aging, pregnancy, or fluctuations in weight, but even still the results will continue to look good for years to come.
