Treating Asthma Without Medications

By Jamie Sue Tan

Modern medicine has worked towards developing of possible cures, preventions, and treatments for various illnesses. It is based primarily on extensive research and evidence. The more popularly used medicinal fact-based approach is often called "conventional medicine" while any other approach is tagged as "alternative medicine". But with all the advancements of science, a cure is hardly obtained. As the saying goes, there isn't even a cure for the common cold.

Modern medicine has created controller and rescue medications for asthma attacks. These often come in the form of inhaled bronchodilators and have been the most popular form of asthma treatment since its invention in the 1960s. Alternative asthma treatments range from anti-inflammatory drugs to acupuncture, herbal concoctions, and breathing exercises.

Breathing techniques, also called breathing exercises and proper breathing, are known to alleviate asthma symptoms without needing medication. The Buteyko Method is a proven breathing technique for successfully reversing asthma symptoms. Various clinical studies have declared the Buteyko Method as 96% efficient in treating asthma.

The Buteyko breathing method was also developed in the 1960s by the late Russian doctor, Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. He noticed that an ill person almost always over-breathes. He thought it possible to reverse the illness by controlling breathing. The Buteyko method was adapted in Russian hospitals and has helped a lot of asthmatics. It allegedly spread after a foreigner was subjected to that treatment in a Russian hospital and preached it in his homeland.

Since the Buteyko method has reached the western world, it has adapted and changed. Techniques may vary across different countries but the core principles of Buteyko remain the same. These principles are reduced breathing, nasal breathing, and relaxation. Overall, the Buteyko breathing method aims on breathing correctly. More specifically, it is about not over-breathing. While the relationship between over-breathing and illnesses seem unclear, Buteyko breathing methods do work and has been accepted as an alternative asthma treatment.
